A programmable headset (100) is provided including an infrared light detector (530) for receiving infrared light signals to establish operational settings. An apparatus for programming a headset is also provided including a headset and a programming unit (400) that includes an infrared light emitter (520) for communication with the infrared light detector of the headset. The programming unit may also include a cradle (420) for receiving a portion of the headset.
