The method involves a sensor (5a) sensing a gear wheel (1) connected to the engine's crankshaft (6) with regularly spaced teeth that produce a signal on passing the sensor for evaluation by the engine controler to determine the revolution rate from the interval between definable signal edges. A first method is used for revolution rates greater than a definable threshold and a second method for revolution rates less then the threshold. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for determining current motor revolution rates.
