PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a scanning optical device capable of realizing a sufficient scanning width and a small spot diameter while making good use of the merit of a reciprocating type deflecting element such as compactness and high-speed performance, and an image forming device using the scanning optical device. SOLUTION: This scanning optical device is equipped with a light source means 1, an optical device 2 converting the condition of a luminous flux emitted from the light source means into another condition, and the deflecting element 5 whose deflection surface is reciprocated, thereby, the luminous flux converted by the optical device is deflected and reflected to a surface to be scanned 8 and the surface to be scanned is optically scanned with the luminous flux in a main scanning direction. In the device, the dimension of the luminous flux in the main scanning direction made incident on the deflection surface of the deflecting element from the optical device is made longer than the dimension of the deflection surface in the main scanning direction.
