A vehicle seat has a squab 1, backrest 2, a seat-integral safety belt 5 anchorage element 4, possibly a reinforced pillar 3 and further features a support frame (fig.3) with a height adjustment mechanism featuring a first element 29, 30 fixed to and movable with the backrest 2 inter-engaged through the range of height adjustment of the seat squab with a second element 35, 42, possibly as part of a parallel linkage arrangement 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 29, 30, 35, 42. The support frame (fig.3) holds the seat squab 1 at variable heights under normal loading conditions. Upon reaching a threshold level under extreme loading conditions, for example those experienced in a vehicle impact, play in the mechanism allows the seat to move forward within the normal mechanical limits of the mechanism. Further extreme loading may lead to plate 29 deforming, in preference of seat pillar 3, so that the safety belt 5 is not paid out excessively during an accident. |
