PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method for a clutch for especially enabling a sure and stable control and a control device especially suitable for enforcing the method. SOLUTION: When a derived function of a friction value - slip characteristic curve becomes more than a set limit value, the slip value is allowed as a target value. The control device is provided with a selection unit for selecting target values by depending on a plurality of operating parameters and a diagnostic unit for allowing the target value as an allowable target value only when the derived function of the friction value - slip characteristic curve becomes lower than the set limit value.
