PURPOSE: A safety apparatus of a steering system for a vehicle is provided to improve safety by preventing sudden change of direction from impact during high speed traveling on the uneven road with fixing a steering shaft temporarily. CONSTITUTION: A steering shaft fixing unit(20) and a steering wheel position sensor(22) are installed in a steering shaft(12) to restrict rotation of the steering shaft and to detect the rotational angle of the steering shaft. The steering shaft fixing unit is operated in changing direction of a tire suddenly from impact during high speed traveling, and the limit on vehicle speed and sudden rotation of the steering shaft is set in a control unit(24). An input end of the control unit is connected to the steering wheel position sensor and a vehicle speed sensor(26), and an output end is connected to the steering shaft fixing unit. The rotation of the steering shaft is restricted with the steering shaft fixing unit in detecting sudden rotation by the control unit. Safety is improved with fixing the steering shaft temporarily.
