PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide production of an exopolysaccharide and a bacterium for producing exopolysaccharides, and in details, a bacterium producing a slime-like exopolysaccharide unattached to the surface of the bacterial cell. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a Sphingomonas bacterium and a method for producing exopolysaccharides by culturing the Shingomonas bacterium in a fermentation broth for a time and at a temperature effective for producing the sphingan exopolysaccharide in a slime form.
