PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture an active material for batteries constituted of lithium manganese spinel, each of which has proper initial capacity and cycle life, at a low cost by a method suitable for industrialization. SOLUTION: The active material for batteries, which consists of a lithium manganese compound oxide represented by composition formula LixMn5-yMyO12 (in the formula, M is an added element, 3.25<=x<=4.25, and 0<=y<=2.0) is produced to a mixture of at least one kind of manganese compound chosen from among manganese hydroxide oxide, manganese carbonate, 3 manganese tetra-oxide, and 2 manganese dioxide, and a lithium compound, and source of supply for M element (when y<0). Then, the mixture is calcinated at the temperature of 350 to 550 deg.C, under an oxidizing atmosphere of 50% higher oxygen concentration. Each manganese compound can be manufactured at a low cost from manganese sulfate. The active material containing the M element is a new material. |
