PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which has a light source giving a uniform illumination distribution on an original platen and precisely reproduces an image of a document. SOLUTION: As a light source means 3, two plane light sources 3a and 3b are arranged opposite the optical axes. The angleθof the plane light sources 3a and 3b to the original platen 1 is 45 deg.. Consequently, the illumination on the document surface becomes uniform, so the image reader can precisely reproduce the image of the original.
