The piston (12) is designed to reciprocate within the cylinder and carries in its upper face (28) a cavity (30), which forms the lower boundary of the combustion chamber. The upper boundary is formed by the cylinder head, which carries the fuel injector system to inject the fuel directly towards the interior of the combustion chamber with a whirling motion. The wall (50) of the cavity in the piston carries at least one zone (52), which is designed and located to increase the turbulence in the whirling movement of the injected fuel.
