PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which has element reliability for element leakage inhibition or the like obtained when an insulating layer or a resistance layer is used as a hole injection layer, and further which prevents elevation of a drive voltage that is a drawback, and which has high reliability and in which the drive voltage is low. SOLUTION: This organic EL element has at least one organic layer, including an organic luminous layer between a pair of electrodes composed of the hole injection electrode and an electron injection electrode, and this has a metal layer containing a metal layer, having a larger work function than that of the hole injection electrode between the hole injection electrode and the organic layer; and this is made to be the organic EL element of a constitution, having an insulation layer or resistance layer between the metal layer and the organic layer.
