Inductive measurement system has primary and secondary coils (3, 5) on opposite sides of an oil carrying channel (1) of a gear transmission. The coils are wound around a soft magnetic core (4) that is interrupted by the oil channel. The coils form a transformer with the primary (3) generating a current in the secondary (5) that serves as a measure for the concentration of ferritic wear particles or swarf in the gear oil. An Independent claim is made for an inductive measurement method for determining the amount of ferritic wear particles or swarf in gear oil.
