A hanging assembly (10) suitable for retaining planar objects (22), such as clothing or towels which includes a generally plantar base member (12) having a width and a height. A concave cam slot (20) extends into the base member (12). A generally planar cover member (14) is mounted in covering relation to the cam slot (20) of the base member (12). A retaining ball (18) is secured between the base member (12) and the cover member (14) for movement in the cam slot (20). The retaining ball (18) is caused to travel in the cam slot (20) by insertion of planar material (22) between the base member (12) and the cover member (14). Releasing the planar material (22), once inserted, causes the retaining ball (18) to exert force on the planar material (22) to retain the planar material (22) between the base member (12) and the cover member (14). In an embodiment, a spacer (16) is secured by at least one fastener (F) between the base member (12) and the cover member (14) so that the base member (12), the cover member (14), and the spacer are generally parallelepipedal.
