PURPOSE: A discharge lamp using a common electrode is provided to obtain high efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs by forming discharge start voltage which is lower than discharge sustain voltage. CONSTITUTION: A glass plate(5) is used for separating an internal region filled with a gas and an external region. The first and the second common electrodes(1,2) are installed at both end parts of the glass plate(5). The common electrodes(1,2) are faced to each other. A power supply portion(6) is used for supplying electric power to the common electrodes(1,2). The first and the second auxiliary electrode(3,4) are installed at each inside of the common electrodes(1,2). The first common electrode(1) and the first auxiliary electrode(3) are formed with one body. The second common electrode(2) and the second auxiliary electrode(4) are formed with one body.
