The apparatus has at least one revolving tool (7) and a non-rotating workpiece (1). A driven circular tool support (2) rotatably mounted in a frame (4) has at least one part (6) which is movable perpendicular to the support rotation axis and which is used to releasably secure a tool or is provided with a drive mechanism for a tool. The frame has a rotatably mounted holder (3) for the tool support and contains a cavity (5) which is open in the tool support direction. The tool support and frame cavity include sections with an internal diameter which is larger than the workpiece cross-section. At least one first clamping device movable in the tool support direction and centrally clamping the end of the workpiece being machined in relation to the tool support is provided, along with a second clamping device (8) for the end of the workpiece being removed. The second clamping device is located inside the frame cavity, can be moved relative to the tool support, and does not alter the position of the workpiece determined by the first clamping device. Alternatively, the second clamping device is movable relative to the tool support, centres one end of the workpiece relative to the tool support, and clamps the end of the workpiece being removed, whilst the first clamping device(s) is movable in the tool support direction and does not alter the position of the workpiece determined by the second clamping device.
