The method involves performing a leak-tightness measurement and a corresponding reference measurement using a reference leak. The presence of a leak in a tank venting system is determined by comparing the results of the measurements. Either a positive pressure or a partial vacuum is detected using a single pressure sensor (40) during the measurements. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a leak testing device; (b) a diagnostic unit.
