The shock absorber has separate systems for controlling the compression and release strokes of the piston (2). The compression stroke forces oil from working chamber A, opening a one-way valve (5) and feeding it back through a channel (3) to a second working chamber (B) above the piston. Excess oil in this chamber flows through an overflow (7) into an integral compensating chamber (6). When the piston is withdrawn, oil from chamber B flows through the overflow into the compensating chamber and out through a channel (4) at its base, opening a second valve (8) and flowing back into working chamber A.
