Locking system comprises a first on-board locking unit and a second unit carried by the user. The first unit sends a wake signal to the second unit, which changes from sleep state to active condition. The first unit sends a third signal to the second unit so that it can determine its position relative to the first unit. Fourth and fifth signals are then exchanged between the two units to complete authentication.
