摘要 <p>PURPOSE: An optical system is provided, in which color selectors and dichroic prisms having coating surfaces with different characteristics are arranged, to thereby reduce parts count and manufacturing cost, while shortening overall length of optical system. CONSTITUTION: An optical system comprises an illumination unit for converting the white light generated from a light source(3) into a linearly polarized light and emitting the linearly polarized light; a first color selector(38A) for polarizing converting the white light emitted from the illumination unit in accordance with the wavelength area; and a dichroic prism(40) formed by bonding first to fourth blocks(42,44,46,48), and which performs color separation to the incident light from the first color selector, permitting the light to be incident to first to third liquid crystal display panels(52R,52G,52B), synthesizes the lights having image information obtain from first to third liquid crystal display panels, and emits the synthesized light to a projection lens(54) for enlarging projection. The first to third liquid crystal panels are arranged to face parts of first to third surfaces of the dichroic lens, the projection lens is arranged to face part of a fourth surface of the dichroic lens, and the first color selector is disposed at the optical path formed between the illumination unit and the dichroic prism.</p>
