PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preparing a high polymeric N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide by taking notice of metallic ingredients being contained as impurities, in the raw material. Further, to provide an intermediate which is suitable for preparing the high polymeric N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide. SOLUTION: To provide the method for prepring the high polymeric N- vinylcarboxylic acid amide containing 300 ppm or less than of N-l, 3-butadienyl- carboxylic acid amide characterized by thermally decomposing or catalytically decomposing a solution containing any one of N-(1-alkoxyethyl)carboxylic acid amide or ethylidenebiscarboxylic acid amide or both containing 100 ppm or less than of the metallic ingredients.
