PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide heat resistant alloy steel having a composition realizing high carburizing resistance without largely incorporating relatively expensive metals such as nickel therein, and to provide a tool for vacuum carburizing consisting of the steel. SOLUTION: The tool for vacuum carburizing is formed of steel containing carbon, silicon, chromium and nickel as essential additional elements. The ratio of carbon in the steel is 0.2 to 0.6% in the formation of the tool. In the part where the carbon ratio lies in the above range, the steel is consisting of 0.2 to 0.6% carbon, 2.1 to 4.0% silicon, 20 to 30% chromium, 20 to 40% nickel and 0 to 2.0% manganese, and the balance essentially iron.
