An exhaust pressure sensing system and method for an internal combustion engine. The system includes a pressure sensor (96) positioned to sense exhaust pressure of an internal combustion engine. An attenuator (92) reduces the relatively large pressure fluctuations that would otherwise impinge on the pressure sensor (96) to provide an averaging of the exhaust back pressure to which the pressure sensor (96) is exposed.
