A string trimmer 10 comprising an elongate shaft 13; a cutting head 18 rotatably mounted on one end of the elongate shaft 13 at least one cutting member 19 which extends from the cutting head 18 and a barrier 20 which is capable of being used by an operator to move vegetation away from a path swept out by the cutting member 19 when it rotates characterised in that the barrier 20 in the shape of a truncated sphere is in the form of a broad band. There is further provided a guard 17 on the string trimmer 10 mounted on the elongate shaft 13 which surrounds part of the rear of the path swept out the cutting member 19 as it rotates wherein the barrier 20 is mounted on the guard 17. The head 18 may rotate so as to cut in a horizontal or vertical "edging" fashion. The barrier 20 may be "latched" in various positions about the pivot axis 231.
