PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of relatively simply producing a hydroxyphenylpropionic acid ester (I) in slight amount of a compound by- produced even when a spiroglycol (II) containing an acid is used. SOLUTION: This method for producing the hydroxyphenylpropionic acid ester (I) comprises bringing the spiroglycol (II) into contact with an alkali compound and successively reacting the treated spiroglycol (II) with propionic acid esters (III). A compound obtained by reacting pentaerythritol with hydroxypivalic aldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst can be used without producing a by-product as the spiroglycol (II). An alkali metal carbonate, an alkali metal bicarbonate, an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal carbonate or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide is used as the alkali compound. The spiroglycol is usually brought into contact with the alkali compound in melted state. The reaction is usually carried out in the presence of an organotin catalyst.
