Polyamide is prepd. in the form of grains or powder by polymerising a lactam in an inert solvent at a temp. below the m.pt. of the polyamide, in the presence of an anionic catalyst and a promoter consisting of the ether of bis-epsilon-caprolactam. Specif. 0.5-2.0 mole % ether of bis-epsilon-caprolactam are used based on lactam. Polymsn. is effected at 125-170 degrees C. The lactam is caprolactam. The reaction mixt. may contain fibres, pref. glass or carbon fibres as filler, or a filler with spherical particles. Gives the polyamide in the form of grains or powder, which can be easily stored, handled and converted into fibres, films, coatings or mouldings. High yields of polyamide with a narrow particle size distribution are obtd.
