PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new dihydroxydiphenyl ether compound which is useful as a monomer for polymer materials having excellent abrasion resistance, heat resistance, and the like, and to provide a method for selectively producing the new dihydroxydiphenyl ether compound. SOLUTION: A new dihydroxydiphenyl ether compound represented by the general formula (D (R1 and R2 are each independently either of a halogen atom and a 1 to 6C substituted or unsubstituted alkyl; R3 to R8 are each independently either of H and a 1 to 6C substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, provided that at least one of R3 to R8 is H; R1 and R4 are each independently either of a halogen atom, a 1 to 6C substituted or unsubstituted alkyl; and R2, R3 and R5 to R8 are each independently either of H and a 1 to 6C substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, provided that at least one of and R2, R3 and R5 to R8 is H), and a method for producing the dihydroxydiphenyl ether compound represented by the general formula (1).
