An optical device made of a metallic material in which are arranged voids that confine surface plasmons and quantise their energies. The voids may be a variety of shapes, but are conveniently spherical or near-spherical. Near-spherical voids in a metallic material, for example a metallic film, act as optical nanocavities and pass light of only a specified wavelength. Thus they can be used as optical filters in a variety of configurations. Results show clearly a filter function in reflectivity spectra. |
