PURPOSE: A multi-split type air conditioner and method for controlling operation of the same are provided to improve energy efficiency and to easily control flow of refrigerant. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner includes a compressor; a condenser(13); an expansion device(12); and a plurality of evaporators(20a,20b,20c,20d,20e,20f,20g,20h). The compressor has an inverter type compressor(14) and a constant-speed type compressor(15) joined in a row and installed in an outdoor unit(11) to compress low-temperature gaseous refrigerant into high-pressure gaseous refrigerant. The condenser converts high-temperature and high-pressure gaseous refrigerant from the compressor into high-pressure fluid refrigerant by exchanging heat with ambient air. The expansion device is connected to an outlet of the condenser to decompress high-temperature fluid refrigerant to low-pressure fluid refrigerant. The evaporators are installed in a plurality of indoor units(19a,19b,19c,19d,19e,19f,19g,19h) to evaporate low-pressure fluid refrigerant to high-pressure gaseous refrigerant.
