A method for driving a solid-state imaging device and a camera having the driving function. In the solid-state imaging device driving method and the camera, the frame rate of the imaging device is varied according to the frequency or illuminance of illumination. Alternatively, the variation of the frame rate of the imaging device and the drive of an electronic shutter are performed together according to the illuminance. As a result, it is possible to widen the imageable illuminance condition while suppressing flicker.
