PURPOSE: A method for setting a multi-state switch path in an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switch is provided to minimize the mixed loading of a UBR(Unspecified Bit Rate) traffic by setting a switch path using information including the number of UBR traffic together with information regarding a predetermined use band. CONSTITUTION: A testing switch path is voluntarily selected(S32), and it is judged whether an available band is greater than or same to a request band(S34). If the available band is greater than or same to the request band, it is judged whether the available band is greater than or same to a reservation available band and the number of UBR traffic is littler than or same to the number of reservation UBR traffic(S36). If the available band is greater than or same to the reservation available band and the number of UBR traffic is lower than or same to the number of reservation UBR traffic, the available band of the selected switch path is set as the reservation available band, and the number of UBR traffic set in the selected switch path is set as the number of reservation UBR traffic and the selected switch path is set as a reservation path(S38). It is judged whether a testing switch path exists(S40). If the testing switch path does not exist, a lastly set reservation path is assigned to a transmission path of a requested traffic(S42). It is judged whether the assigned switch path is for the transmission of the UBR traffic(S44). If the assigned switch path is for the transmission of a CBR(Constant Bit Rate) or VBR(Variable Bit Rate) traffic, a request band is accumulated in the use band of the assigned switch path and the available band is decreased by the request band, and the multi-stage switch path setting result is reported to an upper call process unit(S50,S48). If the assigned switch path is for the transmission of the UBR traffic, the number of UBR traffic of the assigned switch path is accumulated and the use band and available band are maintained, and the multi-stage switch path setting path is reported to the upper call process unit(S46,S48).
