The hardening of proteins such as casein by formaldehyde is accelerated by the use of alkali metal salts, which are indifferent to the protein. Masses or formed articles may be treated with the salt, preferably the chloride, and then with the formaldehyde bath, or the two may be applied simultaneously, e.g. 1-2 parts of a chloride may be added to 100 parts of a 10 per cent formaldehyde bath. The salt may be added to the mass during its formation, as may also substances which subsequently liberate formaldehyde.
