Process for cutting a rare earth metal alloy comprises using a wire with abrasive grains to cut the alloy in such a way that one section of the alloy is immersed in a coolant containing water as the main component and having a surface tension at 25 deg C of 25-60 mN/m. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of a rare earth metal magnet comprising forming a rare earth metal sintered body from a rare earth metal alloy powder; dividing the sintered body into a number of magnets by cutting using the wire with abrasive grains. Preferred Features: The coolant contains a water-soluble synthetic lubricant and water, or a surfactant and water. The coolant further contains an anti-foaming agent and a corrosion inhibitor.
