Medium for detecting or identifying microorganisms with esterase activity, comprising a reaction medium (M) and at least one chromogenic or fluorogenic substrate (S) for esterase, is new. It is a stable, ready-to-use, liquid or gel containing at least one solubilizer and stabilizer (A), at least one selective activator (B), and optionally a solvent (C). Medium for detecting or identifying microorganisms with esterase activity, comprising a reaction medium (M) and at least one chromogenic or fluorogenic substrate (S) for esterase, is new. It is a stable, ready-to-use, liquid or gel containing at least one solubilizer and stabilizer (A), at least one selective activator (B), and optionally a solvent (C). (A) is an ester (ESAG) of sorbitan and fatty acids and/or bile salts, and (B) is a sulfonate (I) and/or nonionic polyether derivative, particularly of formula (II). R = linear or branched alkyl, preferably of 1-30C; X = cation, preferably sodium; and n = 2-15, mean 10. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) preparing the medium; (2) detecting or identifying strains with esterase activity using the medium; and (3) use of (I) and/or (II) as selective activator.
