The method involves determining which data of a two-dimensional data set are to be assigned to an object (1). The center (S), particularly the mid-point or center of gravity of the object is determined. The object data are divided into multiple rings (R1...R20) arranged concentrically. The frequency distribution of the data is calculated for at least one ring, as a function of the angular position. The object is determined by comparing the frequency distribution of the ring with a stored reference frequency distribution. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for performing the method.
