The invention relates to a method for changing the shape of keratin fibers, in particular, for producing permanent waves or for straightening curly hair. According to the invention, the fiber is subjected, before and/or after a mechanical deformation, to a sulfitolysis by treating it with an aqueous solution consisting of a sulfite salt with a pH value ranging from 5 to 8 and, if desired, is oxidatively fixed afterwards. The inventive method is particularly gentle on the structure of the hair when the deformed or softened keratin is subsequently treated with water or with an aqueous solution, which does not contain any oxidizing agents, of a buffer salt with a pH value ranging from 6 to 9 over a period of at least 10 minutes, preferably up to 30 minutes. |
