PURPOSE: A sanitary napkin having regions of varying flexibility is provided to attain improved comfort by physically modifying one or more regions of a relatively stiff absorbent core to thereby improve flexibility in strategic areas of the napkin. CONSTITUTION: The sanitary napkin has a main body(22) with a first transverse side(26) defining a front portion thereof and a second transverse side defining a rear portion thereof and defining therebetween a length. Each of these sides is preferably arcuate. The main body also has two longitudinal sides, namely a longitudinal side(30) and a longitudinal side(32). The main body has a width defined by the distance between longitudinal side(30) and longitudinal side(32). The sanitary napkin(20) has a thickness not exceeding about 5 mm. Preferably, the thickness is less than 3.5 mm, more preferably less than 3 mm, and most preferably, it is of about 2.8 mm.
