The road metalling (1) consists of a support layer (2) on which a cover layer (3) is placed, both layers being formed by plate-shaped components with an individual area of at least one square meter and preferably at least nine square meters. The components of the support layer (5,6) have a greater load supporting capacity than those of the cover layer. In the cover layer components (8,9) are incorporated with mutually differing surface properties and/or composition.
