PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which uses a thermal switch having a small rated value and is excellent in space-saving performance and power source radiation performance. SOLUTION: The projection type display device which modulates the projection light of a light source lamp 3 with a video signal and projects it is equipped with a lamp housing which supports the light source lamp 3 inside the case of the projection type display device; and the thermal reed switch 4 is arranged outside the housing and connected to a lamp control part (oscillation circuit 23 and control microcomputer 24) in a lamp turning-on circuit 2 and when the lamp overheats, the operation of the lamp control part is stopped, and thus a small-sized thermal switch which has a smaller rated value than before can be used.
