PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a photographic base which does not deteriorate the properties and productivity of a functional layer on the back side of a silver halide photographic sensitive material, has superior scuffing resistance, is free of peeling and release and can be continuously coated for a long time with no coating defects. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the photographic base, an inside layer adjacent to a functional layer and an outside layer satisfy at least one of the following four conditions; 1 (the thickness of the inside layer)<(that of the outside layer), 2 (the scuffing resistance of the inside layer)<(that of the outside layer), 3 (the volume concentration of particles in the inside layer)>(that in the outside layer) and 4 the rate of protrusion of a matting agent from the surface of the inside layer is >2, (a) the length of contact of the surface of the inside layer with guide rolls is adjusted to <=5 m after coating with the inside layer and before coating with the outside layer, (b) that with a roll having <=45 deg. holding angle is adjusted to <=0.1 m and (c) the total length of contact of the surface of the inside layer with guide rolls whose surface temperature is (the glass transition temperature (Tg) of a binder resin used in the inside layer)+20 deg.C or above is adjusted to <=3 m.
