PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing various kinds of porous ceramics each of which has communication pores although it has been obtained by melt foaming and excellent water-retention property, water-absorbing property, air permeability, noise absorbing property, moisture absorption/desorption properties or the like. SOLUTION: The method of producing the porous ceramics having communication pores comprises adding a foaming agent to slag, then forming the resulting slag and firing the formed foamable slag. Each porous ceramic has excellent water-retention property, water-absorbing property, air permeability, noise absorbing property, moisture absorption/desorption properties and is used in various applications such as a soil improvement material, artificial soil, a water-retention/water-permeable plate, a fungus bed material for a digestion tank, a noise- absorbing material, a moisture control material, a filter material for air or water, or a fungus bed material for purifying sewage water. In this method of producing the porous ceramics, the slag being a waste material can be effectively reused.
