PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing a low-molecular weight polyacrylamide-based polymer. SOLUTION: This method comprises polymerizing anα,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid amide of formula (1) (wherein, Ra, Rb, Rc, Rd and Re are each H or a hydrocarbon group; at least two of Ra, Rb and Rc may be bound to each other to form a ring together with the adjoining one or two carbon atom(s); and Rd and Re may be bound to each other to form a ring together with the adjoining nitrogen atom) in the presence of an imide compound catalyst having an N-hydroxy or N-oxo cyclic imido skeleton and a radical-forming compound to obtain the objective polyacrylamide-based polymer composed of recurring unit of formula (2) (wherein, Ra, Rb, Rc, Rd and Re are each the same as mentioned above).
