PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide steel for a shaft having corrosion resistance, machinability and straightness almost equal to those of the one obtained by applying Ni plating on free cutting steel 12L14, and which has been used as steel for a shaft heretofore, and free from the need of plating, and whose production cost can be reduced. SOLUTION: The steel for a shaft has a composition containing, by mass, <=0.05% C, <=0.15% Si, <=0.40% Mn, 6.0 to 10.0% Cr, <=0.10% S, 0.30 to 0.80% Ni, 0.10 to 0.30% Pb and 0.001 to 0.10% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
