PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing the lowering of degrading capacity when a degradation reaction is continuously carried out or the operation of an apparatus and suspension are repeated over a long period of time, and to provide an apparatus suitable for the method. SOLUTION: The method for degrading and removing a contaminant having a step for degrading the contaminant by incorporating chlorine and the contaminant into air and irradiating the resulting gas to be treated with light from a light radiating means also has a step for washing a degradation region in which the step for degrading the contaminant is carried out and/or a region in which the chlorine or a chlorine generating source is supplied by supplying an alkaline aqueous solution. An apparatus used in the method is also provided.
