PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester film for a capacitor, which can especially obtain a film capacitor for surface mounting, having a small change in a capacitance due to a reflow soldering process and having a satisfactory insulating resistance, without changing the design of the capacitor and which is suitably used for a chip-type capacitor. SOLUTION: In the polyester film for the capacitor, the heat shrinkage percentage SMD(230) (%) at 230 deg.C of an MD and the heat shrinkage percentage STD(230) (%) at 230 deg.C of a TD lie within regions of expressions (1) -1.0<=SMD(230)<=15.0 and (2), and the surface roughness Ra(nm) and the surface roughness Rmax(nm) of the film satisfy the expressions (3) 30<=Ra<=100 and (4) 400<=Rmax<=1500.
