PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical card reader which can perform random access to a card having large capacity tracks in a clean state. SOLUTION: The optical card reader is equipped with a head assembly which is rotationally driven within the short side width of a card, moves linearly relative to the direction of the long side of the card while facing a freely exchangeable rectangular optical or magneto-optical recording card, and records signals on a plurality of arc-shaped recording tracks whose both ends are swelled to the side located along a central line of the direction of the long side of the card or which obtains the reproduced signal from the track, a recording/reproducing circuit which carries out random access seeking, and records information on the recording track of the card or reproduces information, and a card holding mechanism which positions and holds the card and carries out relative movement in the direction of the long side of the card relative to the head assembly. An optical lens 151a for recording or reproducing of the card is prepared in the plane of rotation of the head assembly, and an optical path for the optical lenses is provided in the central shaft of rotational drive 16 of the head assembly. |
