The invention involves a system and method of controlling an internal combustion engine having an air intake system, an exhaust system (10) with an exhaust passage (58), and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system (66). The EGR system has a cooled EGR passage (64a) extending from the exhaust passage and through a cooler to the intake system for cooled EGR flow and a hot EGR passage (64b) by-passing the cooler to the intake system for hot EGR flow. The method includes determining an operating condition of the internal combustion engine, regulating EGR flow to the intake system based on the condition of the internal combustion engine, and varying EGR flow temperature to the intake system based on the condition of the internal combustion engine.
