PURPOSE: A method for shortening a search time in a mobile communication system is provided to decrease a signal search time by controlling a search time for searching a signal variably in a base station and a mobile station. CONSTITUTION: A code length and a critical value of an initial correlator are set(S101). A receiving signal and a PN code are correlated(S102). A receiving signal is reversely diffused by a correlation of the correlation value and a long code(S103). The reverse diffusion value is accumulated at a predetermined period(S104). The accumulated value is compared with the critical value 1 set in the S101 stage(S105). If the accumulated value is larger than the critical value 1, the correlation code length of the correlator is reset(S106). The receiving signal and the PN code are correlated corresponded to the reset correlation code length(S107). The receiving signal is reversely diffused by a correlation of the obtained correlation value and the long code(S108). The reversely diffused signal is accumulated at a predetermined period(S109). The accumulated value is compared with the critical value 2 set in the S101 stage(S110). If the accumulated value is larger than the critical value 2, a decision is achieved as a signal detection(S111).
