Optically active cobalt (II) complexes represented by the general formulae (1) and (1'): (1) (1') wherein R<1> and R<2> are each independently hydrogen, linear or branched alkyl, linear or branched alkenyl, aryl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, or aralkyloxycarbonyl, these groups being each optionally substituted; or alternatively R<1> and R<2> together with the carbon atoms to which R<1> and R<2> are bonded respectively may form a ring.
