The present invention relates to an interface for a small device (1) such as a mobile telephone, remote control or palm-type computer. Interfaces to input alpha-numerics, to these devices are generally quite clumsy, because of the small size available for keypads. In the present invention, keys (2-7) in an interface are arranged to operate in a plurality of modes, in one mode each key being associated with a category of a plurality of message items such as alpha-numerics and operation of the keys in that mode causing selection of the associated category, and also causing the keys to switch to a further mode of operation. In the further mode of operation, each key is associated with one of the items in the selected category, and subsequent operation of the key resulting in selection of that item e.g. alpha-numeric.
