PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out printing control to the end even if a rear end detecting sensor erroneously determines a black printing portion as a passing of a rear end, in a printer in which printing of a medium such as a sheet and a plate with different in length can be performed and the printing control is carried out based on a rear end detection result. SOLUTION: This printer is provided with a rear end passage determination means 50. In this means 50, when a first reflection sensor 41 detects the black printing portion of the plate P as the passing of the rear end, this detected result is compared with a result detected by a second reflection sensor 40. When the second reflection sensor detects an absence of the plate P, the means 50 determines that the rear end of the printing medium is passed.
